In order to ensure safe navigation, it is essential to improve the well-being of seafarers on board vessels and thereby increase their engagement. Based on this recognition, we are conducting various measures.  To be a better employer, launching an effort to develop systems to improve the welfare of seafarers on board our vessels while also reinforcing systems to ensure safe navigation.

Onboard Health Promotion Programs

To ensure onboard safety, we are installing new safety equipment in addition to continuing with existing activities. In the meantime, we are providing necessary education and training according to appropriate programs.

Also, to promote the physical and mental health management of seafarers, regular health checkups are conducted and a help desk has been set up in offices in Tokyo, the Philippines, and Vietnam. We also provide e-learning and group work related to harassment prevention and mental health care.

Furthermore, to enhance the welfare of seafarers on board vessels, various types of equipment and facilities, as listed below, have been introduced on a trial basis to determine effective options.

1) Food freshness preservation device

This device is designed to be installed in enclosed food storage spaces, where it generates low-frequency waves to keep foods therein fresh for longer. Helps reduce food loss and support healthy diets for onboard crew.

2) Hydroponic vegetable culture kit

This is an automatic control vegetable cultivation system which is able to be operated on board a ship. By supplying fresh vegetables, this kit provides a solution to the issue of shipboard meals often lacking sufficient amounts of vegetables, thus contributing to healthier and more nutritious diets for onboard crews.

3) Water purifier

To be installed on board a ship to supply safe and clean drinking water to the crew. Helps reduce consumption of bottled water and thus slash related purchase and transportation costs.

4) Smoking booth

The booth is fully enclosed and equipped with an internal fan in order to minimize the passive smoking risk on board. Helps seafarers have a healthier and more stressfree life on board.

5) Onboard food catering service

Comprehensive onboard food catering service that undertakes the management of a range of processes from communication with suppliers and price setting to stock control and payment. Helps reduce the burden on the vessel’s management and achieves an improved quality of onboard meals.

6) Inflatable swimming pool

Easy-to-install swimming pools are provided as an onboard recreational tool for the crew.

Conduct Happiness Survey

In order to assess the effect of these measures, we conduct a happiness survey of our crews on a regular basis. Using the information gleaned from the survey, we take steps for improvement as needed to rotate through the PDCA cycle, aiming to increase crew well-being. Going forward, we will continue to  endeavor to increase the well-being of seafarers, which we recognize is vitally important to boost their proactive engagement, with the objective of ensuring safe navigation in a sustainable way.
