Increasing Safety Awareness of Seamen

In addition to improving the knowledge and skills of crew, we are also working to raise safety awareness through the following activities.

Conducting Safety Campaigns

Every year from fiscal year 2010, the president as well as executives and employees of the Group visit vessels under our management to talk in person with crewmembers, about vessel accidents and problems and occupational injuries and illnesses that took place in the past.

Engagement in in-person dialogues with the president helps crewmembers, regardless of nationality, increase their sense of identity as a member of the Group, solidifying the basis of day-to-day safe operations.

From FY2022, we have returned to the previous practice of visiting vessels to collect the opinions of crewmembers onboard, which was restricted due to COVID-19, based on our recognition of the importance of face-to-face communication between land and sea functions for the purpose of appropriate safety management. In the year in which the practice was resumed, infection prevention measures were taken to ensure the safety of each vessel visit.

In addition to the above, we will continue the distribution of video messages from the president and the top management in charge of ship's safety to the entire fleet. This option was adopted as an anti-infection measure and has proven to be an effective tool for communicating the management team’s messages to the entire crew.

  • DPA(Designated Person Ashore of SMS)visited NSU TRUST. A small group meeting was held to prevent infection.
  • Marine team leader visited KIMIMACHI.
Use campaign calendar to alert seafarers to industrial accidents.

Our fleet is becoming increasingly automated, implementing new technologies and systems to go digital and pursue IT sophistication rapidly. However, many accidents and problems are caused by human errors. Even if there is further progress in digitization and IT sophistication, it is seafarers who safely operate our ships.

Noting this situation, the safety campaign provides an opportunity to remind us of the importance of revisiting the basics, enhancing communication between onshore and offshore personnel and seamen as well as increasing the teamwork capacity, and emphasizing the importance of having several people constantly paying attention in order to stop accidents before they happen.

Improving Safety Awareness Using Posters

5 Rules for Navigational Watch

The "5 Rules for Navigational Watch" has been republished during the safety campaign. This was originally created by Shinwa Kaiun Kaisha, Ltd., the predecessor of the Company, and posted on the navigational bridge.

As the crews on our fleet are composed of Japanese, Philippine and Vietnamese seamen, the Rules has been created in each native language and posted appropriately within the view of officers of the watch.

  • 5 Rules for Navigational Watch (English)
  • Vietnamese version on display for Vietnamese crewmembers

Safety Awareness Poster

When vessels under our management cause a major accident, we create a poster to represent a pledge to “never forget the accident and never let it happen again.” We believe that it is important to face up to such difficult reality in order to increase safety awareness.

Pointing and Calling

As a measure to prevent accidents, we are promoting the double-check method of uttering “check, confirm, report,” a safety slogan for accident prevention, while pointing at check items.

In-house Award System

Since 2014, the Company has been presenting an annual award to its vessels that have recorded “no accidents, no casualties, no illnesses*” onboard during the year.

In FY2022, among the 13 qualified vessels for the year, BRIGHT WIND was honored with a special commendation for achieving a clean record for the fourth consecutive year. The commendation certificate and related gift were presented to the crew of the ship. We will continue this internal award program as part of our efforts to boost onboard safety awareness.

*The award is given to vessels under the Company’s management that have reported no onboard accidents or casualties affecting operations, or injuries or illnesses involving disembarkation of affected crewmembers, during the year.

Onboard Health Management

We address mental health issues of crewmembers in order to ensure an environment where the entire crew can work with peace of mind, a key to ensuring safe operation. To this end, we carry out a number of measures, including the following.
